Living in Luxor - Desert Retreats: Dakhla Oasis

Burnout? Stress? Fatigue? Sleep disturbances?
Don't wait before it's too late. Take your time out in the Egyptian desert well ahead of time. Just the silence and the vastness of the desert have balancing and healing effects. Find yourself in the loneliness of the dunes. Realise what's really important in your life. Get yourself into that which wants to grow in the silence of the desert when you allow yourself to create space therefor.

Dakhla Oasis is situated in the heart of the Western Desert in a depression surrounded by limestone plateaus. Dakhla was settled since the 5th dynasty and densely populated during the Roman reign. But unlike Kharga Oasis there were and are hardly any forts - obviously, Dakhla was located on a less dangerous caravan route - although many ruins of coptic churches dating back to the 7th century BC.

Nowadays, the city of Mut named after the goddess Mut is the oasis' largest setlement. The inhabitants live off farming and grow mainly dates, olives, millet, rice, wheat and barley, but also fodder, fruits (guavas, citrus fruits, apricots, apples, pomegranates, plums and figs) and wine.

Dakhla Desert Impressions:

The desert landscapes of Dakhla are diverse and bizarre. The variations of light and shade give them an again and again changing appearance: gentle or rugged, sometimes barren, sometimes entrancing and of transcendental beauty.

Dakhla Desert Retreat:

In the northern Dakhla Oasis, at the edge of limestone plateaus and dunes, there is a small Meditation Centre under German direction built of traditional adobes - the perfect location to recharge your batteries, to go for extensive desert walks and to enjoy absolute silence.

In the courtyard a flowform fountain smoothly purls. It generates the lemniscate (figure of 8) as the water is gently guided through the water course of forms. Nearby, ferrous hot springs invite you to a bath under the stunning starry sky of the desert. In the shady palm garden you may listen to the wind which breezes through the palm leaves.
