Living in Luxor - Nostalgic Dahabiya Nile Cruises

Primarily, Nile cruises are on offer by big cruise ships with more than 100 beds. Nevertheless, more elegant - and quiet - are traditional Nile cruises aboard Dahabiyas. The long, shallow-bottomed nostalgic luxury ships with 2 sails operate on the Nile since the 19th century. Wealthy Europeans chose that exclusive way of travelling to escape from the cold winters in their homelands.

Authentic Dahabiyas (from the Arabic word for the golden one) were and are built from wood and have no motors. They have to be light to be able to sail. The elegant timber construction of a Dahabiya or an even smaller sandal limits the number of passengers which makes that kind of travelling relatively expensive but it guarantees unique and unforgettable holiday experiences: The Dahabiya glides silently along the banks of the River Nile, the water sloshes softly at the bow, you can see rare birds, listen to the sounds of the nature, open yourself to the passing scenery, and meet people who live from and with the Nile while you enjoy the family environment and excellent food aboard. What else could be more restful?

Travel Programme:

During the day ...
you will alternate between navigation and walks on the banks of the River Nile. You will meet the inhabitants of typical and coloured villages. You will visit temples and tombs: the necropolis at El Kab with rock-cut tombs, the Kom Ombo Temple dedicated to the Crocodile God, Sobek, and the Falcon God, Horus, the Edfu Temple of Horus, the Philae Temple built for Isis and the quarries of Gebel el-Silsila which provided stones for the main temples of Egypt, especially in Luxor.

During the night ...
the dahabiya won't sail. It will anchor on the banks of the Nile.

Facultative:
Any time you may book an additional excursion to Abu Simbel or a stay in Luxor or Aswan - either in a holiday apartment or a hotel.

Note:
Because the dahabiya sails without a motor, it is accompanied by a tug boat, which pulls it in case of wind lack.
